About HBA

Over 52 years of building goodwill, fostering communication, and making Holmen a better place to do business.

Our History

The Holmen Business Association was established in 1974, roughly 28 years after Holmen's incorporation as a village. It was formed specifically to increase economic development in the greater Holmen area by connecting local business owners and civic organization leaders.

Also known historically as the Holmen Area Civic and Commerce Association, Inc., HBA has served as the primary networking and advocacy body for Holmen's commercial community for more than 50 years. What began as a small group of local business owners has grown into a vibrant association of 85+ members spanning banking, healthcare, real estate, restaurants, nonprofits, education, government, and specialized services.

Our Mission

“To build goodwill and communication between community, government, businesses, and the public through the promotion of members, businesses, and non-profit organizations, all to make Holmen a better community and a place to do business.”

“WE MEAN BUSINESS!”

About Holmen, Wisconsin

Holmen (pronounced HOHL-mun) is a city in La Crosse County, Wisconsin, situated in the scenic Driftless Area, or Coulee Region. The Mississippi River passes just to the southwest. Originally settled by Norwegian immigrants in 1862, the community was first known as Frederickstown, named for local blacksmith Frederick Anderson.

The name was changed to Holmen in 1875 when Charles A. Sjolander opened the post office. “Holmen” is a Norwegian word meaning “islet” (a small island).

Incorporated as a village on May 7, 1946, Holmen has experienced remarkable growth. From a rural community of approximately 2,500 residents in 1980, it has grown to an estimated population of nearly 11,866 today, making it one of Wisconsin's fastest-growing municipalities by percentage.

Holmen is located along State Highways 53 and 35, with convenient access to Interstate 90. The community boasts an exceptional school system, a network of parks and trails, and proximity to La Crosse's regional amenities including the La Crosse Regional Airport, Mayo Clinic, and Gundersen Health System.
